Protect Yourself From Tech Support Scams

Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers trick you into paying for unnecessary technical support services. You can help protect yourself from scammers by verifying that the contact is a Microsoft Agent or Microsoft Employee and that the phone number is an official Microsoft global customer service number.

I get the usual message that says I cannot connect:

Remote Desktop can’t connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1. Remote access to the server is not enabled (IT IS)

2. The remote computer is turned off. (IT IS NOT)

3. The remote computer is not available on the network. (IT IS)

The laptop that I try to connect to my home computer worked for months.

Suddenly it stopped.

It may be interesting to note (and may even be related to the problem) that when my IT guy tries to connect to my home computer with logMeIn, it does not connect at first. After disconnecting and trying again it goes through.

I hope this info helps you determine the cause and solution.

Thank you.

Eliot

Hi EliotK,

-Did you refer to the help article mentioned in my previous post?

I would suggest you to refer to the help article and check if it helps.

Hope it helps.

I did check the articles that were listed in the replies.

Nothing did the trick yet.

On a happier note, the last few time that LogMeIn was used, it went through without a hitch.

I thought this might have signaled the end of MY problem, but to no avail.

Any other suggestions?

This is driving me crazy.

Thank you for all your help.

Hi EliotK,

Try these steps and check:

a) Open Windows Firewall

b) Advanced Settings (on the left bar).

c) Select Inbound Rules

d) Select Action, New Rule

e) Select the Predefined radio button

f) Select Remote Desktop

g) Select the Tick-box to Ticked

h) Select the Allow the Connection radio button

i) Finish

Let me know the status.

Regards,
Anil

Hi, EliotK

Have you fixed your problem? I have got exactly the same problem, which drives me crazy.

My laptop is Lenovo X1 carbon + Win7 professional.

I can remote connect my office computer with other computers including Win vista and Win XP. But only can’t with this Win7 guy.

I’ve got the same thing Dell Inspiron. Win 7 64 pro. I know it used to work, and the remote desktop that I am trying to connect with is online and waiting for someone to grab it.

Thomblake,

  1. Do you issues with Remote desktop connection?
  2. Do you receive any error message/code?
  3. Have you installed any third-party anti-virus?

Reply with more information to help you better.

Anil

I had the same issue, RDP suddenly stopped working. A rootkit on my pc was causing this. After cleaning it, it started working again.
